Oh the Places We Will Google Map

At the heart of any civilization, we can trace social, political and cultural characteristics by analyzing the region. Dating all the way back to the classical Greeks and Chinese, humans have always been mapping out human systems and spatial interactions. What distinguishes geography from other disciplines is that it investigates groups of people to discover patterns tied to the features of the landscape. We then use this information to "search for explanations of those patterns" (Anderson 35).
Geography is my favorite discipline because it directly correlates to all other disciplines such as history, language, and culture. The composition of the land affects every faction of human function.

The quality of soil determines what food will grow and be consumed; distance from the nearest town or port determines domestic and international trade and external influence; the climate determines what clothing people wear and the animals that survive in the area. Thus knowledge of the spatial arrangement of the Earth and its people is crucial because it provides us with the medium to know and understand the world.
